Beyond The Form

Adaptive Contours

A lighter is operated with a closed hand.

Lydian’s curved, slim body follows the natural shape of the grip, rather than asking the hand to adapt to the object.

Inside, the world’s thinnest piezo igniter, sourced from Japan, reduces the space normally required for ignition, allowing Lydian to maintain its unusually slim profile.

Burn-Free Design

The extended switch keeps the flame further from the fingers.

Inside, a lever mechanism reduces the force required to ignite the flame.

Its broad surface also distributes pressure across the thumb, making repeated use more comfortable.

The same curve continues beyond the hand.

In a trouser pocket, Lydian follows the natural curvature of the thigh rather than pressing against the body as a flat, rigid object.

A Softer Flame

Lydian produces a controlled flame designed for close, deliberate use.

Unlike concentrated torch flames, which can scorch candles and apply excessive heat to tobacco, Lydian’s softer flame delivers heat more gently and evenly, giving you greater control without unnecessary intensity.

Fueled by butane, it burns without the persistent liquid-fuel smell associated with wick-style lighters and remains sealed between uses.

Designed To Stay Cool

Lydian’s metal body functions as a heat sink.

The body draws heat away and disperses it across a much larger surface area. This helps prevent concentrated hot spots and keeps the lighter comfortable to handle even during extended use.

It’s one of the reasons Lydian is made from metal rather than plastic: the material isn’t simply an aesthetic decision. It performs a function.

The first production edition is made from zinc alloy, giving Lydian its weight, durability and tactile presence.

A CNC-machined edition will follow, based on the original construction developed for the Lydian design recognised by the Red Dot Design Award in 2023.

Two Years
175 Prototypes
One Lighter

Lydian took more than two years and 175 prototypes to develop.

Along the way, we refined its proportions, weight, flame, pressure, ergonomics and internal mechanism.

Many manufacturers rejected the idea outright. We were repeatedly told that a lighter built without screws, glue or snap-fit joints would be impossible to manufacture.

So we kept going. Much of the engineering and problem-solving moved in house. We refined the mechanism ourselves until we found a manufacturing partner willing to believe in Lydian and bring it to life.

The final object looks simple. Getting there wasn’t.

Designed To Be Kept

An estimated 13 billion disposable lighters are discarded every year. Around 1.5 billion in the United States alone.

Lydian began with a simple question:
Why should an object we use every day be designed to be thrown away?

Our answer was to make one refillable, repairable, and worth keeping.

The Box Ends Here

No plastic packaging.

The entire packaging system is made from paper, so it can enter ordinary paper recycling streams after use. No plastic trays, film, windows or protective sleeves.

The packaging alone took six months to develop, reducing the structure to what was necessary to protect the object while keeping the material system as simple as possible.
